Chapter 16

Runa hobbled along the narrow alley, watching Porter, who was in the lead, directing the rest of the group towards the airport. Runa’s heels and knees both ached, the distance from the safehouse to their present location seeming more like twenty miles than just under one. Still, it had taken them the better part of three hours to quietly navigate through the maze of alleys and side streets, constantly stopping to listen for the sounds of approaching paras and trying not to disturb the flocks of seagulls perched on the nearby roofs.

Reaching the edge of the garbage-choked alley, he removed the piece of broken mirror from his shirt pocket then turned and gave three flashes to the roof of the safehouse in the distance. “Light ’em up for us, Will.”

He rejoined the group across the street, then they made their way towards the long-term parking lot adjacent to the airport. The runway was a quarter-mile away, and he knew they still had to make it to the control tower and await Ivins’ arrival.

A second later, he heard an explosion to his rear and knew Reisner had fired the last round from his .308 rifle into the propane tanker near the dock.
